Turney graduated from Madison University in New York, and also earned a Doctor of Divinity degree.
He was successively pastor at Hartford and Granville, Ohio (1842–47); Professor of Biblical Criticism, Madison University (1850); and Professor of Biblical Literature at Fairmount Theological Seminary, Cincinnati, Ohio (1853–58). He also taught in Washington, DC.
