Turner at­tend­ed Am­herst Coll­ege (ba­che­lor’s 1874, DD 1905) and Un­ion The­o­log­ic­al Sem­in­aryUn­ion The­o­log­ic­al Sem­in­ary, New York. He then be­came a Con­gre­ga­tion­al min­is­ter, pas­tor­ing in Mass­a­chu­setts and Con­nec­ti­cut. He al­so served as chap­lain at the Hamp­ton Nor­mal and Ag­ri­cul­tur­al In­sti­tute, Vir­gin­ia (1892-1925). His works in­clude:
