Ulmann, an Episcopal minister, held a Doctor of Divinity degree.
He was assistant pastor at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Yonkers, New York, 1884–1885; rector of Christ Church in Yonkers; and, as of 1890, rector of Trinity School, New York City.
He also served as rector at St. Matthews Church (German), Newark, New Jersey, from 1903 through at least 1916. When Ulmann arrived there, the church was on the corner of West Kinney and Charlton Streets. It moved to the corner of Chadwick and Avon Streets in 1906.
