Biography

Jean was the daugh­ter of Ab­ram Ema­nu­el Starr and Jo­han­nah Schoen­field, and wife of Lou­is Mi­chael Un­ter­mey­er (mar­ried 1907).

She was edu­cat­ed at Ko­hut Col­lege Pre­pa­ra­to­ry School for Girls in New York Ci­ty, and was trained to sing Lied­er and play the pi­ano. She al­so stu­died at Co­lum­bia Uni­ver­si­ty, but did com­plete a de­gree.

She lat­er taught at Ol­iv­et Col­lege (now the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ol­iv­et), Ol­iv­et, Mi­chi­gan, and at the New School for So­cial Re­search, in New York Ci­ty.
