Jean was the daughter of Abram Emanuel Starr and Johannah Schoenfield, and wife of Louis Michael Untermeyer (married 1907).
She was educated at Kohut College Preparatory School for Girls in New York City, and was trained to sing Lieder and play the piano. She also studied at Columbia University, but did complete a degree.
She later taught at Olivet College (now the University of Olivet), Olivet, Michigan, and at the New School for Social Research, in New York City.
