Ame was the son of Ame Wessels Vennema and Elisabeth Vander Haar, and husband of Henrietta La Febre.
He attended Hope College, Holland, Michigan (graduated 1879), and New Brunswick Theological Seminary (graduated 1882).
After marrying Henrietta, they went to New Paltz, New York, where he began his career as a pastor. He eventually served churches in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Port Jervis, New York; and Passaic, New Jersey.
He joined the Council of Hope College in 1905, and in 1911 was elected president of the college. He was inaugurated in 1913 and served until 1918.
