Peter married twice: to Karen Marie Madsine Christensen (June 1884) and Oline Olsen (August 6, 1901).
He attended high school in Askov (1872–77), and later studied under minister H. F. Feiberg. He also taught at the Missionary Institute in Copenhagen.
He emigrated to America in 1879, and initially lived in Chicago, Illinois. By 1884, he was in Elk Horn, Iowa, where he taught at the Danish High School. The next year, he was serving as a pastor in Jacksonville, Iowa.
He later moved to West Denmark, Wisconsin, where he taught at theological seminary until 1893. He went on to serve as president of Trinity Seminary at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, and then as president of Dana College, 1897–99.
