Biography

James mar­ried twice: to Mar­tha A. Mol­lie Reeves of Clay­ton Coun­ty, Geor­gia (Feb­ru­ary 24, 1883, Car­roll Coun­ty, Georg­ia), and, af­ter Mol­lie’s death in 1914, Ol­lie B. Chand­ler.

He be­gan stu­dy­ing mu­sic when quite young, and did his first teach­ing at age 24.

Vines’ prin­ci­pal teach­ers were C. R. Mul­lins and Ben­ja­min B. Beall, both of whom had stu­died at An­tho­ny Sho­wal­ter’s South­ern Nor­mal Mu­sic­al In­sti­tute.

Vines was liv­ing in Car­rol­lton, Geor­gia, in 1904.

The 1910 cen­sus list­ed him as a mu­sic teach­er.
