Herman was the son of Harry Francis Vos and Nellie Borgerding.
He was educated at the Shaffer School of Music, Muskegon, Michigan; Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois; the Richard DeYoung School of Music, Chicago; and the Cosmopolitan School of Music, Chicago.
He played the organ for radio station WMBI in Chicago, was a music editor for Singspiration, Inc., and was an organist and adult Bible class teacher at the First Church of the Nazarene in Chicago.
