Whately attended Oriel College, Oxford (BA 1808, MA 1812, BD & DD 1825), and was ordained an Anglican priest in 1814.
He was Bampton Lecturer in 1822, became principal of St. Alban Hall, Oxford, in 1825, and bishop of Dublin, Ireland, in 1831.
He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy and the House of Lords (1833).
