Biography

Joseph was the son of Jo­seph Whate­ly and Jane Plu­mer.

He at­tend­ed Ori­el Col­lege, Ox­ford (BA 1808, MA 1812, BD & DD 1825), and was or­dained an Ang­li­can priest in 1814.

He was Bamp­ton Lec­tur­er in 1822, be­came prin­ci­pal of St. Al­ban Hall, Ox­ford, in 1825, and bi­shop of Dub­lin, Ire­land, in 1831.

He was a mem­ber of the Roy­al Ir­ish Aca­de­my and the House of Lords (1833).
