Wright was born to English Christian parents in Lisbon.
He returned to England to work in business, but after helping Dwight Moody in evangelism campaigns in 1874 and 1875, he abandoned his plans for a business career.
He became an evangelist in England and Scotland, and returned to Portugal several times for evangelism meetings.
He wrote or translated over 60 hymns in the Brazilian Baptist hymnal Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer).
