Wright succeeded his teacher, John Garth, as organist at Sedgefield church, then followed his father as organist at Stockton-on-Tees parish church in 1797, resigning the post in 1817. He then worked in the town as a teacher.
He composed a concerto for harpsichord or piano and small orchestra, an operetta and a setting of the Fifth Ode of the First Book of Horace.
