Educated at Pembroke College, Oxford (BA 1864, MA 1867), York was ordained a deacon in 1865, and priest in 1872.
He served as curate of Charlbury, Oxfordshire (1865); Bembridge, Isle of Wight (1872); chaplain in the Royal Navy (HMS Crocodile, 1872–75; HMS Seraphis, 1876; Temeraire, 1877–80); Greenwich Hospital School (1880–89); Greenwich Hospital (1888–89); Royal Marine Light Infantry (1889–94); and Royal Marine Artillery, Eastney Barracks (1894–98).
He retired in 1898.
