Zelley married three times, to Ida Shreve, Clara Dobbins, and Martha Golding.
He attended Pennington Seminary, Pennington, New Jersey, and Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, where he earned his PhD and divinity degree.
Ordained a Methodist minister, he worked in the New Jersey Conference as a statistical secretary and treasurer.
He was also a trustee of Pennington Seminary, and promoter of the camp meeting movement.
He retired in 1929.
Zelley wrote over 1,500 poems, hymns, and Gospel songs.
