Lyrics

Hear me, O God! when near Thy throne
My earnest cries ascend;
I plead Thy righteousness alone,
And on Thy grace depend.

Oft has that grace enlarged my heart,
Distressed by anxious care;
Again Thy mercy, Lord, impart,
Again regard my prayer.

When shades of night around me spread,
I’ll all my ways rehearse,
In silent witness on my bed,
And with my heart converse.

While many, wrapped in nature’s night,
For worldly good inquire,
O lift on me Thy saving light!
’Tis all that I desire.

I then in peace my eyes will close,
And take my needful rest:
Nor fear, nor danger interpose,
Of Thy defense possessed.
