The God of Israel is He that giveth strength and power unto His people.
Psalm 68:35
Words: Attributed to Ambrose of Milan, 4th Century (Rerum Deus Tenax Vigor). In the 1875 revised edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern, the index credits the English translation to John M. Neale. However, Julian says, The rendering…is much nearer those of Caswall and Chambers than that of Neale.
Music: Ludborough Timothy R. Mathews, in Church Hymns, 1874 (🔊 pdf nwc).
O God, of all the strength and power,
Who dost, Thyself unmoved, each hour
Through all its changes guide the day
From early morn to evening’s ray;
Brighten life’s eventide with light
That ne’er shall set in gloom of night,
Till we a holy death attain
And everlasting glory gain.
Almighty Father, hear our cry
Through Jesus Christ our Lord most high,
Who with the Holy Ghost and Thee
Doth live and reign eternally.
