At age 10, Adcock joined the church choir and sang solos at occasional concerts.
At age 16, he became an usher in a boarding school in Spalding, Lincolnshire, and was appointed choirmaster of the chapel and conductor of a choral society.
He was choirmaster at Castle Gate Church in Nottingham for 21 years.
Around 1858, he joined the music establishment of Henry Farmer in Nottingham, and rose to the position of manager, a job he held until Farmer’s death in 1891.
Upon Farmer’s retirement, he was appointed conductor of the Nottingham Sacred Harmonic Society, where he served 16 years.
