Walter was the son of Walter William Alcock and Mary Galpin.
He studied under Arthur Sullivan and John Stainer at the National Training School of Music (1876–81).
He served as organist at churches in Twickenham and London, and played the organ at Westminster Abbey. In 1916, he became the organist for Salisbury Cathedral. He played the organ at the coronations of King Edward VII and King George V
He taught organ at the Royal College of Music, where he had a number of accomplished students, including Edward Bairstow.
He was knighted in 1933.
