Originally a Methodist preacher, Aldersley joined the Salvation Army (SA) around 1879, serving as a sergeant at Keighley, Yorkshire, where he sold earthenware.
He moved to New Zealand in 1884 and lived in Christ Church and Wellington.
Largely housebound due to severe arthritis, he wrote extensively. Several of his songs appeared in the SA’s War Cry in 1883.
