Eliza was daughter of William Dykes and Elizabeth Huntington; wife of William Thompson Alderson, chaplain to the West Riding House of Correction, Wakefield (married 1850); and sister of composer John Bacchus Dykes.
She wrote the majority of her hymns in Wakefield.
