Biography

James was the son of Hen­ry Pow­ell and Mary So­phia Wat­son. He des­cend­ed from the same line as Ro­bert Ba­den-Pow­ell (1857–1941), found­er of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.

James was edu­cat­ed at Exe­ter Col­lege, Ox­ford (BA 1864, MA 1869). In 1881, he was cur­ate of St. And­rew’s, Ma­ry­le­bone, Mid­dle­sex.
