Introduction

Biography

George was the son of sur­geon Jo­si­ah Body and Ma­ry Snell, and hus­band of Lou­isa Jane Lew­is, daugh­ter of Will­iam Lew­is, vi­car of Sedg­ley, Staf­ford­shire.

He was edu­cat­ed at St. John’s Col­lege, Cam­bridge (BA 1862, MA 1876). In 1885, he re­ceived an hon­or­ary DD de­gree from Dur­ham Uni­ver­si­ty.

He served as cur­ate of St. James, Wed­nes­bu­ry (1863–65), Sedg­ley (1865–67), Christ Church, and Wol­ver­hamp­ton (1867–70); rec­tor of Kir­by-Mis­per­ton (1870–74); ca­non of Dur­ham and Mis­sion­er of the Dio­cese (1883); and proc­tor for the Arch­dea­co­nry of Cleve­land, York­shire (1880–85).
