Caird was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham; Peterhouse, Cambridge (1936–39); and Mansfield College, Oxford.
He was minister of the Highgate Congregational Church, London (1943–46), then moved to Alberta, Canada, in 1946 to become professor of Old Testament at St. Stephens’ College.
In 1950, he became professor of Biblical Studies at McGill University, Montréal. Returning to England in 1959, he became Senior Tutor at Mansfield College, Oxford.
At the time of his death he was Dean Ireland’s Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford.
