Died: January 2, 1830, Marseille, France.
Carter was educated at Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.
After graduating from Dartmouth in 1811, he taught school for a short time in Salisbury, New Hampshire, then in Portland, Maine.
He was a Professor of Languages at Dartmouth (1817–19), and in 1819 became editor of the Statesman newspaper in New York.
He also traveled in Europe, publishing two volumes of foreign letters.
