Son of a teacher, Charteris attended Edinburgh University (MA 1852, DD 1888, LLD 1898).
He served as Professor of Biblical Criticism in Edinburgh (1868–95), and Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1892.
He was instrumental in establishing the Church of Scotland’s Life and Work Committee in 1869, founded Life and Work magazine in 1879, and was chaplain to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.
