Chatfield was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was Bell’s University Scholar and Members’ Prizeman. He graduated in 1831, winning a first class in classical honors.
Taking Holy Orders in 1832, he served as vicar of Stotfield, Bedfordshire (1833–47) and vicar of Much-Marcle, Herefordshire (1847–?).
