Biography

Allen was the son of Ro­bert Chat­field and Su­sa­nnah Mo­ney, hus­band of An­na Ce­cil­ia So­ber (married June 25, 1833, St. Ni­cholas Church, Brigh­ton, Eng­land).

He was edu­cat­ed at Char­ter­house and Tri­ni­ty Col­lege, Cam­bridge, where he was Bell’s Uni­ver­si­ty Schol­ar and Mem­bers’ Prize­man. He gra­du­at­ed in 1831, win­ning a first class in class­ic­al hon­ors.

Taking Ho­ly Or­ders in 1832, he served as vi­car of Stot­field, Bed­ford­shire (1833–47) and vicar of Much-Marcle, He­re­ford­shire (1847–?).
