John was the son of William Cluett and Ann Bywater, and husband of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bontecou.
He emigrated to America with his family in 1850. In 1857, he began working in his father’s book and piano store in Troy, New York.
He also worked at various time for Maullin & Blanchard, a shirt and collar manufacturer (later renamed to George B. Cluett & Brothers).
If you know where to get a good photo of Cluett (head & shoulders, at least 200×300 pixels),
