James was the hus­band of Ar­line Val­en­tine.

A staff writ­er for the Stamps-Bax­ter Music Com­pa­ny, he was in­duct­ed in­to the Gos­pel Mu­sic As­so­cia­tion’s Gos­pel Mu­sic Hall of Fame in 1992.
