Davies went to work in the brickfields at age eight, working his way up to become deputy manager.
His received his musical training from Joseph Owen, school master of Rhos. He eventually composed 200 pieces, and edited Cerddor y Tonic Sol-fa.
He was ordained a Methodist minister in 1895, and went to Swansea to take charge of Smyrna chapel, Plasmarl.
