Introduction

Born: May 30, 1601 or 1609, Lis­bon, Por­tu­gal. Birth name: Vio­lan­te Mon­te­si­no.

Died: Jan­ua­ry 28, 1693, Con­ven­to de Nos­sa Sen­hora da Ro­sa, Lis­bon, Por­tu­gal.

Biography

Violante was the daugh­ter of Man­oel da Sil­veira Mon­te­si­no and He­le­na of Avi­la.

In 1630, she be­came a nun and en­tered the con­vent of Nos­sa Sen­hora da Ro­sa in Lis­bon.

She is re­mem­bered for her ba­roque po­et­ry, and has been called the Tenth Muse of Por­tu­gal.

In 1949, the Lis­bon Mu­ni­ci­pal Coun­cil named a street for her near Ave­ni­da da Igre­ja in Al­va­la­de.
