Het was educated at Bruce Castle School by private tutors, and at Wadham College, Oxford (BA 1867, MA 1869).
Ordained in 1867, he served as curate at St. Peter’s, Vauxhall (1867–72); vicar of Parkstone (1872); and canon of Sarum and prebendary of Gillingham Major (1900).
