Biography

John was the son of Rev­er­end Will­iam Earle of Har­low, Es­sex, and Tun­bridge Wells, Kent. His name is oft­en giv­en with just the ini­tials J. C. His full name ap­pears in the ta­ble of con­tents of An­nus Sanc­tus, by Or­by Ship­ley, 1884, page viii.

John was edu­cat­ed at Exe­ter College, Ox­ford (BA 1871), and be­came a bar­ris­ter at Lin­coln’s Inn in 1876.
