David was the son of Theodore Ela and Priscilla Woodward.
He graduated from Wesleyan University with honors in 1857, and entered the American Methodist Episcopal ministry in 1860.
In 1876, he earned his Doctor of Divinity degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.
For two years he was principal of the East Greenwich Seminary.
