With the help of a Mr. Hextall, the local dissenting minister, Enfield entered the Daventry Academy at age 17, under Dr. Ashworth.
His first pastorate was with the congregation at Benn’s Garden, Liverpool, where he served 1763–70.
From 1770–85 Enfield was in Warrington, Cheshire, as minister to the Old Presbyterian congregation, and as teacher of belles-lettres and other subjects, in the Dissenting Academy founded there in 1757.
After Warrington, Enfield moved to Norwich, where he spent the rest of his life and was pastor of the Octagon chapel.
