Eleazar was the son of Nathaniel Fitch and Mary Thompson.
He married three times—to Elizabeth Lucia Wooster (1817), Susan Augusta Root (1822), and Mary Coffin Lunt.
He graduated from Yale College in 1810, and was a Professor of Divinity there, 1817–63.
With Leonard Bacon and others, he compiled the Connecticut Congregational Psalms & Hymns for Christian Use and Worship in 1845. He contributed three psalm versions and three hymns to it .
