Eliza was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Barrett, and wife of Karl (Charles) Theodor Christian Follen (married 1828).
Her husband was a German poet who moved to America in 1824, and at one time taught history at Harvard University. He died on the steamer Lexington, which burned and sank in Long Island Sound, January 13, 1840.
In her early life, Eliza contributed various pieces of prose and poetry to newspapers and magazines. She edited The Child’s Friend for several years.
