Franzèn studied theology in Turku, Åbo Akademi (where he became Librarian and Professor of Literary History), and later in Uppsala, Sweden.
In 1810, he moved to Sweden, where he served pastorates at Kumla, Örebro, and Santa Clara, Stockholm.
In 1834, he became bishop of Härnösand. He also served as secretary of the Swedish Academy, and published a hymnal together with Johan Wallin.
