Gaddis was the son of Vineyard M. Gaddis and Ida O. Burchfiel, and husband of Ida M. Maddron.
As a young man he had the unfulfilled dream of being an evangelistic singer.
After teaching in the county schools for several years, he spent the remainder of his working career with the Stokely-Van Camp canning industry in Newport.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newport.
