A com­pos­er, con­ductor, vio­lin­ist, or­gan­ist and teach­er, he was con­sid­ered the lead­ing Dan­ish mu­si­cian of his day.

His wife was Em­ma So­phie Ama­lie Hart­mann, the daugh­ter of Jo­han P. E. Hart­mann (mar­ried Ap­ril 27, 1852). He de­di­cat­ed his Spring Fan­ta­sy to her to ce­le­brate their en­gage­ment, and his 5th Sym­pho­ny with pi­ano con­cert­ante as a wed­ding gift.
