Thomas was the son of John Gisborne and Anne Bateman.
He was educated at St. John’s College, Oxford, where he was 5th Wrangler of the year (BA 1780, MA 1783). He served as perpetual curate of Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire, and later prebendary of Durham.
He was a member of the Clapham Sect, which fought for the abolition of the slave trade in England.
