Biography

Thomas was the son of John Gis­borne and Anne Bate­man.

He was edu­cat­ed at St. John’s Col­lege, Ox­ford, where he was 5th Wrang­ler of the year (BA 1780, MA 1783). He served as per­pe­tu­al cur­ate of Bar­ton-un­der-Need­wood, Staf­ford­shire, and lat­er pre­ben­da­ry of Durh­am.

He was a mem­ber of the Clap­ham Sect, which fought for the abo­li­tion of the slave trade in Eng­land.
