Sid was the husband of Myrna Louise Wheeler (married 1956).
He emigrated to America at age 14.
Though a high school dropout, he graduated from Asbury College (now Asbury University), Wilmore, Kentucky (later receiving an Outstanding Alumni Award); Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee (master’s degree); and Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana (PhD).
After graduation from Asbury, Guillén taught Spanish at Fern Creek High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Kentucky Southern College (merged with the University of Louisville in 1969).
In 1969, Guillén joined the faculty of Anderson College (now Anderson University), Indiana, as a Professor of Spanish. He taught there, and served as chairman of the Foreign Language Department, retiring in 1995.
In 1979, Guillén won a Lilly Fellowship. In 1987, he was chief translator and directed Language Services for the Pan American Games in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for 12 years, and traveled extensively around the world.
He and his family attended the East Side Church of God in Anderson for 40 years, where he taught Sunday school and served on the church board.
