Biography

Hare was the son of Ir­ish im­mi­grants, and hus­band of Grace Oli­ve Dun­smoor, a teach­er at Du­rant School in Oakland, Ca­li­for­nia (ma­rried Feb­ru­ary 24, 1903).

He worked for the YMCA while at­tend­ing school, and gra­du­at­ed from Pa­ci­fic Theo­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary. As of 1902, he was pas­tor of Oak Cha­pel in Be­ni­cia, Ca­li­for­nia (lat­er to be­come Ply­mouth Con­gre­ga­tion­al church).

He and Grace went on to serve ma­ny con­gre­ga­tions, tak­ing tough fi­nan­cial si­tu­ations and mak­ing church­es sol­vent, in­creas­ing con­gre­ga­tion size, and nur­tur­ing the spir­it­ual needs of the mem­bers. Alfred and Grace oft­en per­form­ed du­ets, with Al­fred acc­om­pan­ying on the gui­tar.

Alfred built and of­fi­ci­at­ed at the Eagle Rock Con­gre­ga­tion­al church before being called to Santa Cruz, and much la­ter served Park Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church in Los An­ge­les.

Alfred event­ual­ly became an es­tate at­torn­ey, and on week­days had a suc­cess­ful law of­fice in down­town Los An­ge­les.
