Hare was the son of Irish immigrants, and husband of Grace Olive Dunsmoor, a teacher at Durant School in Oakland, California (married February 24, 1903).
He worked for the YMCA while attending school, and graduated from Pacific Theological Seminary. As of 1902, he was pastor of Oak Chapel in Benicia, California (later to become Plymouth Congregational church).
He and Grace went on to serve many congregations, taking tough financial situations and making churches solvent, increasing congregation size, and nurturing the spiritual needs of the members. Alfred and Grace often performed duets, with Alfred accompanying on the guitar.
Alfred built and officiated at the Eagle Rock Congregational church before being called to Santa Cruz, and much later served Park Congregational Church in Los Angeles.
Alfred eventually became an estate attorney, and on weekdays had a successful law office in downtown Los Angeles.
