Biography

Thomas was the fa­ther of Wal­ter Hate­ly.

He was an im­port­ant mu­sic­al in­flu­ence on the Scot­tish Free Church in the years af­ter the 1843 Dis­rup­tion. He ap­pears in the por­trait of the Dis­rup­tion meet­ing that year.

He taught thou­sands to sing in parts and lec­tured wide­ly on the his­to­ry of psal­mo­dy.

Works

In ad­di­tion to se­cu­lar mu­sic, Hate­ly is said have com­posed ov­er 40 psalm tunes.
