Walter was the son of Thomas Hateley.
He was educated at the High School in Edinburgh. At age 18, he went to the Leipzig Conservatorium and studied under Plaidy, Moscheles, Reinecke, Hauptman, Richter and Dryschock (1861–64).
Upon returning to Edinburgh, he began teaching, instructing in piano and singing from 1870 until his death.
He also served as choir master at the Free High Church (1867–71) and Free St. George’s (1885–98).
