Hatfield was educated at Middlebury College, Vermont, and at Andover.
He served as pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, Missouri (1832–35).
In 1835, he moved to New York, where he was pastor of the Seventh Presbyterian Church, then at the North Presbyterian Church (1856–63).
From 1846, he was Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian General Assembly.
In 1864 he was appointed special agent to the Union Theological Seminary, New York.
