Helmore was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford (BA 1840, MA 1845).
He was ordained in the Anglican church and became vice-principal and precentor at St. Mark’s College, Chelsea, where he served 35 years. In 1846, he was appointed master of the choristers in the Chapel Royal, St. James, where Arthur Sullivan was one of his pupils.
