Howard began his musical career as a chorister at the Chapel Royal under William Croft. He later studied under Johann Pepusch.
He eventually became organist at St. Clement Danes, Strand, and St. Bride’s, Fleet Street, London. He received a Doctorate of Music degree from Cambridge University in 1769.
