Elam was the son of Elam Ives Sr., and Sarah Hitchcock. He married twice, to Louisa T. Todd of Hamden (April 15, 1822), and Lucy (surname unknown).
In 1830, he moved Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he founded the Philadelphia Musical Seminary and taught violin, pianoforte, and singing. Six years later, he moved to New York, starting another musical school there.
By 1857, he was evidently living with Lucy and their daughter Ella in Trenton, New Jersey.
