Essek was the son of William A. Kenyon and Anne Eliza Knox. He married twice: to Eva S. Spurling (May 8, 1893) and Alice Maude Whitney (1914).
In 1898, he opened the Bethel Bible Institute in Spencer, Massachusetts, and was its president for 25 years. After moves and name changes, the school merged with Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts.
