Henry was the son of Samuel Hall King and Eliza Shaw, and husband of Susan Ellen Fogg.
He was educated at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine (BA 1859, AM 1862) and the Newton Theological Institution (DD 1877).
He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1862, and taught Hebrew at the Newton Theological Institution (1862–63).
He served pastorates at the Dudley Street Church, Boston, Massachusetts (1863–82); Emanuel Church, Albany, New York (1882–91); and First Baptist Church, Providence, Rhode Island (1891–1906).
