George was the son of Isaac Kitchin, rector of St. Stephen’s, Naughton, Suffolk, and husband of Alice Maud Taylor, daughter of Bridges Taylor, the British consul in Denmark.
He attended Ipswich Grammar School, King’s College School and College and Christ Church College, Oxford.
He served as Dean of Winchester, then Durham (1909–12), and was the first Chancellor of the University of Durham.
